Dr. Mark Weiss, MD , Medical Director


Dr. Weiss completed his M.D. at the University of Toronto in 1987. He is an M.D. psychotherapist with a practice that focuses on the medical and psychotherapeutic management of addiction. Dr. Weiss also maintains an interest in the management of anxiety disorders and the way in which anxiety and addiction are inter-related. His approach to emotional healing finds its roots in the psychology of mindfulness which now has substantial scientific research based data to support its efficacy. Dr. Weiss has obtained training with John Kabbat-Zinn and Dr. Zindel Segal in both Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy. He has also obtained training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy a newer form of CBT that emphasizes the role of acceptance in emotional wellness.

Dr. Gerald Cooney, MD , Consulting Staff Physician


Dr. Cooney completed his medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1969. After 17 years as a full-time Emergency Physician, during which time he served terms as Chairman of the East York Medical Emergency Group and President of the Toronto East Medical Association, Dr. Cooney's interests turned to family and community medicine. Since 1987, his family practice has increasingly focused on individual and family dysfunctional disorders, particularly those associated with addiction.

Dr. Steven Melemis, MD , Consulting Staff Physician


Dr. Melemis received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Toronto, and was a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at the University of California in Berkeley. He returned to the University of Toronto where he received his M.D. and completed a residency in family medicine. Since 1988, his practice has focused exclusively on the field of addictions and mood disorders.
Dr. Melemis is a medical inspector for the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and has authored province-wide guidelines used by the College in the assessment of addiction cases. He developed the guidelines used by a number of hospitals and institutions in the treatment of addictions, and authored the province-wide guidelines used by the Addiction Research Foundation in the management of detoxification emergencies. A member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Dr. Melemis has lectured widely on addiction medicine and appeared on numerous television programs as an expert on addiction-related issues.

Dr. Frank Evans, BSc, MD, ASAM , Consulting Staff Physician


Dr. Evans received his B.Sc. in Pharmacology in 1977 and completed his medical studies at the University of Western Ontario in 1981. After graduating, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and served as a medical officer/base surgeon. Board certified in aerospace medicine, Dr. Evans worked with Health and Welfare Canada in assessing aviation personnel with chemical dependencies, and was a Consultant in Addiction Medicine for the Canadian Airline Pilots Association. Dr. Evans has completed a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Loma Linda University, California, and was also board certified in the subspecialty of addiction medicine. He works full-time as an addiction medicine specialist and is also on staff at the Humber Memorial Hospital Chemical Dependency Unit. Dr. Evans is the Secretary/Treasurer and President Elect of the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine, and the Chair of the Ontario Medical Association section on Addiction Medicine.
